why are trees important to the environmant?

One Tree Planted focuses on the six pillars of why trees are so vital to the planet and our existence including; Air, Water, Biodiversity, Social Impacts, Health, and lastly, Climate. With rising deforestation, it’s important to know that trees help clean the air we breathe, filter the water we drink, and provide habitat to over 80% of the world's terrestrial biodiversity. They also provide jobs to over 1.6 billion people, absorb harmful carbon from the atmosphere, and are key ingredients in 25% of all medicines.

All of our obsolete packaging is recycled into park benches. Fresh water is recycled for other plant uses and eventually recycled for return to the city.

All edible manufacturing scrap, including vegetable oil which does not meet our quality standards, is recycled into animal feed or Bio-Diesel.

at Wise Snacks, we’re committed to sustainability and creating snacks that have positive impact on the environment. that’s why we’ve partnered with one tree planted, a non-profit organization focused on reforestation. Every year we are committed to plant over 100,000 trees across the United States.

27 FACTS ABOUT TREES AND FORESTS

Why Are Trees Important? 27 Facts That Show The Integral Role They Play For All Of Life On Earth

Forests are so much more than a collection of trees. They are complex living worlds that encompass intertwined layers of life and stretch across massive, diverse landscapes. They’re also nature’s great providers: the benefits of trees include pulling carbon from the atmosphere and sequestering it via photosynthesis, filtering and absorbing air pollutants, releasing clean oxygen for us to breathe, providing habitat and food for wildlife, stabilizing soils, growing food and medicine, protecting us from harmful UV rays, acting as natural air conditioners, securing our freshwater supplies, and amongst many other benefits!

Pennsylvania 2023
Keystone 10 Million Trees Partnership

about this project

This project addresses agricultural, forestry, and stormwater goals within the PA Chesapeake Bay PA WIP3 and would help make progress toward the PA WIP3 goal of 83,000 acres of buffers within the Susquehanna and Potomac watersheds. While many projects are directed to farmland, it may not exclusively be agricultural lands depending on the priorities and demand within the counties. Priority counties mentioned below, while each unique, have a significant agricultural production presence. Depending what commodity selected, these counties account for more than half of agricultural production in PA. Crop yields and livestock units combine to increase nutrient loading. Seven of the eight counties are in southern Pennsylvania with a high nutrient and sediment delivery load to the Chesapeake Bay.

Priority sites

  • Trees along and upland of streams (particularly along agricultural properties known as “riparian buffers”)
  • Includes upland, agroforestry, and silvopasture plantings
  • Urban and suburban (including focused street tree plantings within the Chesapeake Bay Watershed)
  • Mine land landscapes via the recommendations from the Appalachian Regional Reforestation Initiative Forestry Reclamation Approach. Contact us for more info on this specialized work.
  • Includes upland, agroforestry, and silvopasture plantings
  • Chesapeake Bay Watershed
  • Our priority focus region is the bottom 8 counties of PA: Franklin, Adams, Lebanon, Lancaster, Centre, Cumberland, Bedford and York counties.
  • Partners outside of the Chesapeake Bay Watershed may request trees. If there is high demand in a season, trees in the 5 counties above will be given priority.

Adding 10 million native trees to the Pennsylvania landscape will boost the economy through trees’ ability to reduce public health costs, crime, and engaging local industry such as nurseries, garden centers and like-minded industries. The Partnership contracts annually with growers in the mid-Atlantic to purchase trees and supplies in advance of production, generally 16-24 months prior to delivery. Contracts include a specified price, quantity, species list, quantity, delivery date, and include preferences for local contractors, job creation, and socially and ecologically beneficial production practices.

Forward contracting addresses a shortage and diversity of trees available for purchase in the region by increasing the predictability of the market for suppliers. Forward contracts have an extensive track record in stabilizing supply, price, and quality in the agricultural and energy markets. The partnership’s forward contract request for proposals give preference to growers in Pennsylvania in order to support economic and workforce development in the region. Communities benefit through workforce development, economic resilience, and ecological benefits.

Ecological benefits

Adding 10 million native trees to the Pennsylvania landscape will improve the Bay’s water quality by stabilizing stream and river banks, filtering water flow from agricultural, urban, and abandoned mine land environments. Unprecedented resources* and streamlined access to diverse species of high-quality trees and supplies to encourage healthy forest buffer implementation. Our goal is more than just planting trees. Our proposal insists on services and products that favor thriving forest buffers that result in significant nutrient and sediment reductions for years. We believe the quality offered within this proposal will encourage others to offer similar practices netting accelerated buffer implementation throughout PA.

Branching Out : Other Ways We're Green

Through an alliance with our distributor partners, we recycle 1,500 tons Of corrugated material (cardboard) annually.

All of our obsolete packaging is recycled into park benches. Fresh water is recycled for other plant uses and eventually recycled for return to the city.

All edible manufacturing scrap, including vegetable oil which does not meet our quality standards, is recycled into
animal feed or Bio-Diesel.

Energy is controlled and conserved through regular testing and audits. Wise is an active member Of a Demand program managed by EnerNOC.

Employees at our manufacturing facility collect aluminum cans and donate the recycling proceeds to a local Cancer Association.

All shipping pallets used in our warehouse and on our delivery trucks are continually repaired for re-use, and eventually re-cycled at the end of their useful life.

More than 50% of the cartons we use to transport our product are reused 3 to 4 times.

We are a great family
